Will Smith will not be charged with punching Chris Rock.
The 53-year-old actor was at the Oscars and took offense when Chris made fun of his wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s clean-shaven look, so he took to the stage to punch him in the face, but the police department of Los Angeles not investigate the incident as no complaint has been filed.
In a statement, the LAPD said: “LAPD investigative entities are aware of an incident between two people during the Oscars program. The incident involved one person slapping another. The person involved declined to file a police report. If the party involved wants a police report at a later date, the LAPD will be available to complete an investigative report.”
The 57-year-old comedian presented the award for Best Documentary Feature on Sunday (27.03.22) and referenced Jada’s shaved head when comparing it to the buzzcut sported by Demi Moore in the 1997 war film ‘GI Jane’ .
Although Will – who won Best Actor for his performance in ‘King Richard’ – was first seen laughing, Jada seemed unimpressed and Will then walked up to the stage, slapped the presenter and walked away.
Chris said, “Oh Wow. Will Smith just fucked me up.”
Will was then muted as he shouted from his seat, “Get my wife’s name out of your fucking mouth.”
Chris said, “Wow man. That was a ‘GI Jane’ joke.”
After the attack, the Academy condemned Will’s actions reminding viewers that the goal is to “celebrate” deserved winners in the film world.
A statement on Twitter read: “The Academy does not condone any form of violence. Tonight we are thrilled to celebrate our 94th Academy Award winners, who deserve this moment of recognition from their peers and moviegoers around the world. “
